The boomer war on aging's a bust

...Boomers (now 45 to 59 years old) were doing the young things - running, rollerblading, bungee jumping, driving a motorcycle - in ever-increasing numbers.

Pick your poison: This generation wasn't going quietly into old age.Just under a year ago, a story in The Hamilton Spectator cited market research showing that more than 61 per cent of boomers felt about 10 years younger than their true age.

"For them," the story said, "50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30."News stories and our own day-to-day experience showed us that boomers acted hipper and younger than their parents.

Boomers - the first of them are turning 60 this year - were generally refusing to concede virtually any activity to a younger generation.

The heck with aging gracefully.

She was in the later stages of diabetic retinopathy, a serious condition caused when diabetes damages the light-sensitive part of the eye called the retina.

Left untreated, patients with diabetic retinopathy can go blind.

ADVERTISEMENT So Reichenberger felt she had a choice: slowly go blind or try a new, barely tested procedure that is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

She chose the procedure, she says, because it sounded better than the alternative.

Today, just 11 days later, she's glad she did.
