Shortstop battle heating up... "This is the new Guzie right now." Robinson has publicly said it's Guzman's job to lose. "We're hoping that he will revert back to what he was," Robinson said. "It wasn't that he had one good year in Minnesota. He had three good seasons when he was hitting .270 or so." But Robinson is also thinking of alternative plans if Guzman doesn't win the job, and said recently that he'd consider asking Guzman to work out at second base to increase his value if he had to come off the bench. Clayton may have to settle for that same role, but Robinson hasn't talked to either player about being a backup. He'll let the competition play out. "We need Guzman to have a good year," Robinson said. "If we don't see that in him, if Royce Clayton or someone has a good spring, that's who will start the year." Robinson also spoke at length to Clayton in the off season and played a large part in his arrival. Both are from the Los Angeles area, and Robinson's message to Clayton was clear: The job is open. Clayton is no Jeter, but he's no slouch. He is a career .258 hitter in 15 big-league seasons, and he hit .270 last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks-a full 51 points higher than Guzman-knocking in 44 runs and stealing 13 bases. "I am a 15-year veteran, everyone in this game knows what I am capable of doing," Clayton said. ... Eye Surgeons Debate Blade vs. Bladeless LASIK on AllAboutVision. ......
