"The thought is a lot worse than the actual injection," says Pratt, struggling not to let it get the best of him. "The thought is awful." He'll have an hour with it while getting his left eye examined before Dr. Robert Johnson comes in with a syringe of Avastin, which would come as a surprise to anyone who follows biotech news. Avastin is a much-publicized drug for cancer. As an unexpected and untested side benefit it also helps eyesight in people with macular degeneration, an age-related disease that is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. "This is the first application of a drug that we can expect will improve vision in about one-third of people with the wet stage of macular degeneration," Johnson says. "All the other treatments are just to slow down the decline in clarity of vision." The use of Avastin for wet macular degeneration is experimental and off-label, meaning it is not FDA approved and there have been no studies to gauge possible adverse effects.
