had a new advertising idea a few years ago: Put digital ads where the shoppers are - in shopping malls.

Last year, company executives decided they needed another idea to get shoppers to actually stop and look at the ads.

So they started giving some of their ad space away for free.

The free ads contain the kind of information that AdSpace believes will stop shoppers in their tracks: news of sales and special deals.

The free ads are airing at Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus and at 25 other shopping centers throughout the country.

The company plans to have the advertising network in place in 16 additional malls by July.
